Storytelling is at the heart of advertising, and at the heart of the copywriting function. Ours is a culture that loves stories-in the form of TV shows, movies and gossip columns-but many have forgotten that stories originate with words.
Long ago and far away, if you wanted a break from the tough routine of day to day, your cheapest, simplest option for at-home entertainment was to open a book. Today, TV provides that service of cloaking the mind in a comfortable and comforting story.
The difference is that reading builds more interesting minds than TV does. A constant dose of TV is a form of pablum that has an unfortunate "dumbing-down" effect on the viewer. It's a cultural problem we don't have the answer to.
But the bottom line remains: written words are behind most significant storytelling. This holds true for business as well as entertainment.
